Digitalism: Life moves on (interview)

Digitalism are a German electronic music duo. Jens "Jence" Moelle and İsmail "Isi" Tüfekçi started making music together in 2004. Tehy come from Hamburg and will play Prague's Roxy on April 17, 2015. We chatted with them about music and water.

What is the scene in Hamburg like?
It’s got a bit quieter, as bars have become more popular now, but there’s still a lot of clubs, and they spawned big names like Solomun and the guys from Dynamic Records… Global players!
When we’re in town we don’t go out so much, because we obviously have enough late nights whilst we’re on tour. We prefer a bit of peace-and-quiet sometimes when we’re home.

If one goes to hamburg for a weekend, what are your tips for places to visit?
Go to the harbour, round the lake in the center, and get silly in St. Pauli, which is the red light district.

In December you released the Kassettenrecoder mix. Do you miss cassette tapes?
Yes. But life moves on.

You are just starting the US tour. How did you prepare for it and does your set change a lot during tours?
We didn’t have much time to prepare anything because of our schedule, but having said that: We’re always ready.. Whether we go play in Boston or in Barcelona, we treat everything the same. If you adapt too much, you lose some of your identity. We love to just get somewhere and improvise.

Speaking of the show, what will the Prague DJ set be like… ? What equipment you are using?
We use what’s in every club nowadays, which is Pioneer CDJs. We stopped bringing vinyl when travelling became too heavy. Also, a lot of times, the turntables that you can find in clubs are not very well looked after. It’s sad. But it’s just how it goes. As for Prague, expect a lot of energy — we’ve not been around for a while!

Your newest release is the Second Chance remixes collection. How did you choose the people who made those remixes? The names Capa and Traumer are not huge yet but sound like they are:)
We always curate the remix packages in a way so all the versions complement each other. Yeah, Capa is on the verge of being huge, and Traumer actually approached us. What he sent us was so cool that we had to take it on board!!

It has been almost 4 years since you released your last album. Do you plan for another any time soon?
It’s really about time, isn’t it?

You have collaborated with people who are more indie than dance. And it worked. Do you plan to do so in the future?
Maybe. Probably… We never know. Some stuff we decide really last-minute.

What is best and worst about being a duo?
Always having a friend with you is great, having to deal with each others habits is the flip side. But we mastered it, and after all these years we get along great.

Anything else you want to add?
We can’t wait to come to Prague!!
